Being made perfect

In the Christian belief about the afterlife one of the most widely accepted is that a person will be made perfect.  The explanation for what this means is merely that you will have a body free of flaws and defects.  As for how and why this happens it is given that we will be made perfect like Jesus is because of His sacrifice.  I'd like to go a little bit deeper than the Sunday School narrative that all of your pain, weakness, deformity, frailty and sinful human desires will be removed and that will make you perfect and happy forever.

Let us unpack the concept of perfection.  It is an ideal that cannot be achieved in this temporal existence.  It represents an unattainable state for anything or anyone in the known universe.  Now let's imagine a thing actually being perfect.  Better yet, let us imagine a being which is perfect and it is a short walk because it has been done for us and he is called God.  God is without flaw.  His love is perfect.  His anger is perfect.  His judgment is perfect.  Everything he has ever done has been perfect, even if he changes his mind about it later.  Still part of his perfect plan...apparently.

Now crossfade back to a human being alive but about to die.  In life this person is in a fragile, flawed, broken and withered body that causes them constant, physical pain.  We can't forget that it is full to the brim with sin as well.  However, this person is faithful and forgiven so going from life to death will be awesome as the reward for their lifetime of kneeling and bowing and denying themself sinful pleasures will be that they will be made perfect and live happily ever after.  So how will this person gain perfection.  First of all the frail body will be replaced with a healthy one, free of flaw.  The shrapnel wounds from the war will be gone.  The torn ligament in their knee will be fixed.  All aches and pains and ravages of old age will disappear, as will all scars.  The kidney he donated to his sister will be back along with his wisdom teeth and tonsils and his long dead sex drive because his perfect dick can get perfectly erect again.  Perfect.  Everything works perfectly.  He can run and jump and fuck like a porn star in his new, perfect body...if they do that sort of thing in Heaven.  Now his sister dies as well.  She comes to Heaven and is given a perfect body.  Same thing.  Every ill is healed and every flaw fixed and her reproductive system is primed and ready just like when she was young and healthy.  Perfect.  The mind is also made perfect.  One would assume that people are given perfect understanding, perfect knowledge, are free from doubt or worry or struggle to comprehend anything.  That means that our guy and his sister have the same perfect knowledge, understanding and awareness.  What they see and feel and know is identical because it would have to be less than perfect in some way to differ.  But wait.  God is perfect.  He has perfect knowledge and understanding.  If theirs is perfect as well then it is identical to God's.  The humans and God think and feel and act exactly the same, perfect.  If one of our humans were to have a different idea than God's it wouldn't be the perfect one that God, necessarily, has so it would have to be a flawed idea in some way.  Where would such a thing even come from in a perfect person?  This, by the way, is where the idea of a triune God falls apart.  If all three are God that means that they all have the same perfect thoughts, desires and actions.  How could one of them decide to think or do anything other than the perfect thing?  This means there is nothing to distinguish one from the other and we are stuck with one being, one set of thoughts and actions, the perfect one.  

Diversity comes from imperfections.  Our flaws are what gives us personality.  Our ability to excel at one thing and be incapable of another is how we are different from each other and why we need each other.  If we are all perfect then we will all be perfect in exactly the same way, have exactly the same capabilities, thoughts and feelings.  We will all be God.  We will cease to be the individuals we are now.  I will cease to be the individual I am now when I expire.  I have no wish to be aware of becoming something else that is not me.  If my consciousness simply gets made perfect and becomes part of God then what's the point of me?  This is why the idea of perfection, like the concept of eternity, is abhorrent to me.  I see nothing to invite belief in such nonsense other than a childish acceptance of a superficial notion of going to a better place.  That sounds nice.  I could perhaps not worry about how and why it will be better and figure God will sort it out but if I base it on what the Bible describes it sounds truly horrific and I want no part of it.  Perfect, eternal happiness.
